Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory condition that primarily affects the joints in your spine; however, it can also affect other parts of your body such as, the eyes, arm and leg joints, skin, and connective tissues.
Joint fusion is the primary concern with newly diagnosed ankylosing spondylitis patients. It is important to be treated early to stop the progression of the disease.
AS is commonly misdiagnosed as chronic low back pain.
Other than that, the other symptoms include:
Pain in the lower back in the early morning, which can also be felt during workout sessions.
You may have consistent pain in the lower back, and hips that lasts longer than 3 months.
If AS has gone undiscovered and untreated, you may have changes in posture that can cause difficulty in breathing. Patients will also likely have fusion in the spine that causes deformity.
Causes and Risk Factors:
SEX: AS is more commonly diagnosed in men than women.
AGE: Typically between 18 and 45 years of age.
HEREDITARY: There is a lab test that can detect a gene called HLA-B27. This gene is commonly found positive with patients who have AS.
